Cover your backflow in the event of cold weather!

As the cold weather approaches, be sure to cover your backflow device if the temps look to dip below freezing for an extended period of time. Most backflow preventers, however not all, are located near the house, usually along one of the front sides. However, they can also be located near a landscape bed near the street or water meter. If you are unsure where yours is located, feel free to give us a call and we may have the location in our system.

The best way to cover them is to wrap an old blanket or heavy towel around them and then cover them with a trash bag or trash can. In general, you are just trying to keep them insulated so they won’t freeze during an early cold snap. This time of the year, there is no worry that any of the lines underground will freeze as the ground temperature is still too high. However, we just get a little concerned when the weatherman calls for temps below freezing during the overnight and covering the backflow will minimize any freeze risk.photo
